I love the mini semi autos, I love to hunt with the carbine style semi autos. I have and older skinny barrel 196, 6.8 mini and a target model. I missed a great deal on a mini 30 about 3 yrs ago.

Any other fans?

They are a hot item lately, I was at Academy Sports and they say a lot people have been asking for them. I had a buddy that was wanting to sell one for $650 I think but that was before craziness.

I used to have a mini 14 and I love them. I wish prices weren't so bad right now so I could afford another. I had a guy trying to sell one to me the other day for 1400. It had a crap ton of accessories and 200 rounds of ammo but that's still a ridiculous price.

I have 2, one is the GB (Government-Bayonet) model, SS with ss factory folding stock. The other is a limited SS with gray laminated stock that matches my gray laminated 10-22.

We had a good time shooting last weekend. My daughter 12 yrs old shooting my target mini. She can hit pop cans at 70 yds and hit 2" orange circle peel & stick targets at 100 yds.

I've got one that I put the Mo Reaper and Mo Rod on, each of which tightened up the groups noticeably. I still want to bed it now though and do a trigger on it. You can make them pretty accurate and without spending a hell of a lot, especially if you do your own work. The Mo Rod and Mo Reaper would be pretty simple to replicate if you hve the machine tools. Pretty basic machining projects.

I would get both. I love them both, I did some testing with each one separately and then both together and the two of them definitely made the biggest improvement. As I said, you could probably make them yourself if you have the time, skill and machine tools, but while I have a mill and lathe I do not have the skill needed at this time.

How do you like the Mo Reaper? I was thinking about getting one for my 6.8 mini. Where did you get one in 6.8? Is that the new 6.8 spc. Ive been reading about? Some spec ops guys wanted something with a little more bang, so they got together with Remington to develop the 6.8 spc. Its really gaining a large following quickly. Numbers on it are supposed to be real good. There is a push to get the military to adopt it as the standard round. Are we talking about the same round? If so, where did you get a mini 14 chambered in this caliber? Ive been looking at the mini 14, but I just cant decide between the mini 14 and the mini 30. If there was one chambered in 6.8 spc. I think that would be my next rifle.

I've had my 6.8 SPC for several years, 4 I think. I was at an LGS and they had 3 nib, I traded a TC Contender with 2 barrels in 223 and 35 Rem. It was well worth it but they are hard to find now. There was some talk the mini was not cut to SAAMI specs like the AR chambers. On another board about 20 members passed around a reamer to get the SAAMI chamber cut, one member bought the reamer and the rest rented the use and sent it to the next user. Great rifle, short, quick and mild recoil are great for slinging over my shoulder for a 5 mile hike.

Did the redneck test of filled bottles of water to see how far the 130 gr sp in 6.8 SPC will penetrate. I tested the same way on some 110 gr bullets. The 130 gr Sierra Gamekings only penetrated 5 pop bottles and fragmented the 6th bottle.

I tried to video by myself but my phone fell over on recoil for this shot. I had was the aftermath damage shot. On my YouTube channel I have action shots of the 110 gr test.

Change out stocks today, had a BC folder laying around but never used. Got it on sale from Sportsman's Warehouse closing for $25! I needed a place to set my new dot sight, also on sale at Cabela's for $30. It goes green/red and 4 different dot/sight settings. I kinda like the green cross best.

Don't know about where you are, but a basic 581 Mini (wood stock, blue finish, no flash hider) goes for $627 NIB at our local Wally World. They're usually pretty consistent on pricing that sort of thing so you could ask at the gun counter at your local Wally World if they don't have one in stock and have a look-see at the price. Its a lot more than I paid for my original Mini but that was a looong time ago and the magic of 3% inflation should double prices every 23.5 years or so....

Thing about AR's is that the ones at the extreme low end of the market have not doubled in price since the early '90's because there are so many companies knockin' 'em out these days. Mini's are and always have been exclusive to one company, so there's no competitive price pressure there. Only downside to the Mini in my book is Ruger's parts policy, but you can work around that. Easiest way is to send the whole blessed gun in before you have any customization done on it and get a spare firing pin fitted.

Or look around for a used one. I've seen some mighty fine looking Minis in the low fives. Not so many police trades any more but they occasionally turn up so keep looking and you may get lucky....

Best,
Grumpy

Remember the junky MUZZELITE stocks for Minis?

This one came in years ago just to see what they were all about, and after checking it......... we dumped it on a shelf in the armoury and promptly forgot about it.
One day my son found the box, opened it and asked me about it. While we were discussing the de-merits of that stock, I got an idea. We pulled the bendy plastic guts out of it including the trigger and machined duplicate parts of aircraft aluminum, the same grade we use for out SP scope mounts............ and......... !!
It worked! We did a bit more creative cutting off the phony sights and handle sight, installed (sandwiched) the top carry handle with two steel plates and mounted an Aim-point sight on it. Dropped one of our Mini 14s into it and presto!

Trigger pull very decent, no more flexing. Turned out to be a keeper truck-rifle.

You and My wife would "Get Along" then, as Her hand guns have to be stainless or 2-tone. My Mini Underfolder is just like yours,..a 184(think,..have to look) series from 1992.
Dog: lots of hoky-ness about the Orig. A-Team TV show, but what fun it was! When I was Active duty and then the last two years of the show in the reserves,..it was a weekly happening to grab a Beverage and watch the show...I have many of those orig. episodes now on iTunes. As for the MOVIE,..now there was a Masterpiece. Anybody recognize the two Orig. Cast members who Made Cameos in the Movie?? and during the Opening sequence, when Liam Neeson jumps out of the Back of the Van, what was he Shooting? A Mini of Course!! but the Flying scenes were Priceless!!! a few of the Fellas In "the Unit" used to call me "Murdoch",..not that I was Crazy mind you,..but I can sure conjure up Crazy behind a Stick!!
Like I said,.My wife wants just about every Gun i Buy or have,..so a Synthetic stocked(bantam, or i'll have to have one made) Mini in Stainless is in her future...she's already "Appropriated" my Tapco Stocked 10/22 due to her "Vertically Challenged" Frame....But Wow can the Woman Handle a Magnum,..glad to have her at my 6....

and....never been a fan of their factory hand guard either.

so...i got a new hand guard/heat shield on, and went to a wood stock immediately. then i decided to use the existing rail and run a burris FF 3 on it. dunno how i'll like the set up yet, as i haven't even shot it. i'll report on the range soon. this mini is getting set up for a fun gun....not an accuracy tester like my last mini 14. i'm liking this set up so far, any criticisms or ideas appreciated.

i decided to attempt to re stain and re finish the stock. i really like the stock itself (older style curved butt stock), but the finish left much to be desired imo. i have a good friend who is an awesome carpenter/wood worker and is going to help me out a bit. got it all sanded down a few weeks ago and i have the stock wrapped up for now. my friend lives in another town several hours away, so i'll wait to see him before i start on the staining, he'll help me out to get it right. i was thinking of staining it considerably darker. but if anyone has a different idea, let me know.

wish me luck!

Are you going to put another sling stud on the forearm for a bipod mount? I like the SS models and will give the action a little polish to smooth up the moving parts. My last one was a mini 6.8 SS, the action felt rough at first compared to my 196. I may look for a brake for my 6.8 mini.

i'm not particularly interested in a bi-pod, as a just want this to be a light, quick handling mini. i once spoke with one member of another forum who swore by polishing up the action of the mini, and considering he shot some of the best mini groups i have seen....he must have been onto something for sure. but imo, basic use will get the "polishing" you need, but doing it yourself is likely more effective and cheaper in the long run. my last mini seemed to smooth out over about 200-300 rounds.

same goes for my trigger....i guess i am possibly used to sub par triggers, but i felt my mini trigger smoothed out fairly nice after a bit of use. always thought my stock mini trigger was way better than my stock AR trigger. but i have heard over and over that a gun doc trigger is a work of art.

Took my GB to the range when AI3531 and I went Saturday after I got off work, I was given two NEW Pro Mag Mini 14 20 round mags to try in the GB from my Glock Dealer, both were trying to be sold by a guy walking around with a box full of magazines at a gunshow for $80 a piece, dealer got them for $30 for Both :o He let me have them for $20.

They functioned fine, I forgot to take a pic of my Rifle Target... The only issue I ran into was with a spent casing, it hung up in the GB and caused the round in the mag to nose dive, and the bolt dented the crap out of the shoulder. Other than that it's dead nutz accurate! Actually had a blast shooting it!
