I am looking into purchasing a Cetme ( Want a Fal but don't want to spend the coin) but a couple of friends have warned me away from them. I Don't know much about the platform so any info is appreciated. Btw the one I am considering is a co-workers and he wants $550 for it which seems to be fair but I really do not want a turd.

Any way you can get any range time on it prior to purchase? I've no personal experience on the CETME, but its a close relative to the HK 91/G3 series which are some of the really good ones.

$550? Getting down into WASR money there, so I don't think you're going to do any better in a .308 than that. I spent almost triple that on my M1A back when I had the scratch to do that sort of thing. Don't regret it at all, don't get me wrong, just not seeing how you're going to get a .308 for that kind of money otherwise. Think PTR91's are about a grand these days.

Did some more looking around and came up with this thread: http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=136773

Some positive some negative. According to some of the ones posting a lot of 'em are long in the tooth. If you get a chance to look one over, check it thoroughly would be my advice - rifling and crown damage would be two things I'd look for in an older rifle personally.

Good luck and all the best,
Grumpy

Y'all c'mon and lay it out, I'm curious about the CETME too.

My Cetme is a reliable shooter and shoots straight, only problem I have with mine is it does not like G3 mags so I got actual Cetme mags and they work great. My sons Cetme will use both Cetme and G3 mags no problem

Thanks OPAWW. I am gonna try to run a few mags through my co-workers this weekend to see what I think. Will post my findings here.

The only other trouble I had with my Cetme was the extractor spring, it is nothing more then a carter pin bent at about a 4deg. angle. If it flatens out on you, then just take the pin out and re-bend it put it back in and have a good time. If it straightens out after every few shots then get a new pin and bend it put it in and have some fun

I ended up giving the CETME a pass. I know the price sounded to good to be true but it was rough and had rust everywhere. I think my co-worker just left it in a case in the back of a closet or something. I didn't even bother to shoot it as I didn't want to break the thing down to clean it.
